i;:;? Welcome back Juniors and Seniors! iGood luck sophomores !| I Grimsley student body j welcomes Mr. Renn GRIMSLEY HIGH LIFE Volume LV, Number 1 ‘Voice of the Whirlies' August 26, 1985 Renn becomes fifth principal at GHS by Stephen Canter Mr. Michael Renn, Grimsley’s new principal, has been with the Greensboro City School System for seventeen years. He was a history teacher at Smith for nine years before being promoted to the Director of the Social Studies program for Greensboro Public Schools. In 1983 he was appointed principal of Lindley Elementary School. He assumed his current position as principal of Grimsley July 1 succeeding Dr. Bonnie Baur Hunziker, who resigned to join her husband in Michigan. Mr. Renn is looking forward to his job here at Grimsley with much enthusiasm. “I taught at a high school level and I’m glad to be back with high school students.” Mr. Renn said, “I did not have any first impressions of Grimsley. I have dealt with Grimsley many times, with the history department mostly. I have known people here since I have been in the school system. The only impression that I have is one that I have developed over many years.” His one impression of Grimsley is one of beauty and integrity. “I’m glad to be work ing with such a fine group of pro fessionals.” Mr. Renn has strong feelings about the new school board policies. “Since one of my hob bies is running, I am glad that they have passed the ‘no smoking policy’. I do not smoke and I do not feel that others should smoke because it is bad for your health.” He, on the other hand is looking forward to the ninth grade mov ing up to the high school, “I went to a high school that was nine through twelve. It puts the sophomores in a middle group in stead of being on the bottom and that is sort of nice.” And not to forget the closing off of free lunch for sophomores “it makes it more of a privilege for juniors and seniors. It gives the freshmen and sophomore something to look forward to.” As for the rumor that lunches will become closed lunch for everyone - it’s just a rumor. The school board has yet to decide whether or not lunch will be closed for juniors and seniors. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Renn and daughters Meagan and Caroline School Board adopts new policies by Wilson Winchester Grimsley students are faced with sevearl major policy changes which affect many “traditions” on high school cam puses around the city. These policies, proposed by the Greensboro school board, went into effect today, August 26,1985. The traditional ritual of leaving campus for lunch has been a dai ly routine for many high school students, but with increased pressure from concerned parents and a sharp decline in revenues, the Greensboro school board found it feasible to close lunch for the sophomore class. The punish ment for defiance of this policy could lead to a maximum of two days suspension, and any junior or senior who has been granted piermission to leave campus, that allows a sophomore to ride with them to lunch can/and will receive a similar punishment. The issue to ban the use of tobacco products on campus was a controversial issue at first, but with intense study, the Greensboro school board found it beneficial to ban the use of tobac co products on school grounds. The addition of ISS (In School Suspension) as an alternative punishment plan that will handle students with attendance related problems. The school board has also found it practical to end all nonschool related functions during school hours; therefore, ending ac tivities such as pep rallies. These newly adopted policies were developed in the interest of all students; thus creating a positive environment in which education is priority number one.
